Episode 650: From Addiction to Purpose with Chris Pondoff | Faith, Sobriety & Second Chances
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In Episode 650 of It's Bizzy, I sit down with Chris Pondoff, founder and host of Pondoff's Anonymous, Recovery Pastor at Underground Recovery Community in St. Louis, and a man whose life is a testament to the power of faith, recovery, and second chances.

Chris shares his journey from growing up in a culture where alcohol was everywhere to losing his father, hitting rock bottom, and eventually finding lasting sobriety. We talk about addiction, grief, faith, community, adoption, and what it really means to rebuild a life one day at a time.

One of my favorite parts of this conversation is hearing how Chris and his wife became foster parents and ultimately adopted their son—a powerful reminder that God's plans are often bigger than anything we can imagine.

We also discuss why long-term recovery is about so much more than putting down the drink, how community becomes medicine for those struggling with addiction, and why joy is still possible after even the darkest chapters of life.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Chris's recovery journey and 12 years of sobriety
• The loss of his father and its impact on his addiction
• Faith, healing, and spiritual transformation
• Why community is essential in recovery
• Adoption, family, and second chances
• Finding joy after addiction
• Long-term sobriety and personal growth
• Hope for anyone struggling with addiction or loving someone who is

If you or someone you love is struggling, this episode is a reminder that recovery is possible and that you are never alone.

Episode 649: When Bizzy Stopped Being Busy
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

Have you ever noticed that when life gets uncomfortable, it's easier to stay busy than it is to sit still and feel?

In this solo episode, I'm sharing something I've been learning while writing my book. After reaching more than 45,000 words, I've spent a lot of time looking back on my life, and I've realized that for years, busyness was my way of avoiding difficult emotions. If I was moving, multitasking, taking care of everyone else, planning the next thing, or chasing the next goal, I didn't have to slow down long enough to feel what was really going on inside.

Lately, I've been doing the opposite. I've been setting boundaries, staying home, writing, reflecting, praying, and learning that growth often happens in the quiet moments we try so hard to avoid.

I also share some observations from my recent travels and how watching Europeans experience America through fresh eyes reminded me of the things we often take for granted—our friendliness, our optimism, our communities, and the simple joys that surround us every day.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed, distracted, exhausted, or disconnected, this episode is an invitation to slow down, take a breath, and ask yourself a simple question:

What am I staying busy to avoid feeling?

In this episode:
• Why busyness can become a distraction from our emotions
• What writing my book is teaching me about myself
• The myth of multitasking
• Learning to be present instead of constantly moving
• Gratitude, travel, and seeing America through new eyes
• Why slowing down may be the most productive thing we can do

Thank you for listening. And remember: you are not alone.

Episode 648 How Nervous System Health Shapes Recovery: A Conversation with Lane Kennedy
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In Episode 646, I sit down with Lane Kennedy, a woman with 29 years of continuous sobriety and someone whose work deeply resonates with where so many of us are today. Lane is a Calm Living Docent who guides people toward optimal health through a powerful blend of DNA wisdom, meditation, mindfulness, and personalized nutrition. She’s also a mindfulness and nervous system regulation teacher, DNA functional nutritionist, and the author of Sobriety for Dummies.

Lane and I talk about what long‑term recovery really looks like after decades of growth, motherhood, and unexpected health challenges — including her recent diagnosis of dysautonomia, which forced her to rethink her pace, her priorities, and her definition of “busy.”

We dive into her early days getting sober in 90s Los Angeles, her years in the fashion world, and how she eventually found her way into the work she does now: helping people restore balance, boost vitality, and unlock the body’s natural capacity for healing. Her approach blends biochemistry, mindset, stress science, and lived experience — and you can feel that wisdom in everything she shares.

In this episode, we explore:

·       How nervous system health shapes sobriety at every stage

·       Why so many of us feel overstimulated, anxious, or burnt out

·       The impact of technology and constant dopamine hits on our emotional stability

·       Parenting in a tech‑saturated world

·       The difference between real human connection and digital connection

·       How recovery evolves over decades

·       Why co‑regulation, community, and in‑person meetings still matter

·       What it means to create more quiet, space, and presence in your life

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in “busy mode,” this conversation will help you understand what your body is trying to tell you — and how to come back to yourself.

Thank you for listening. And remember: you are not alone.

Episode 647 When Sobriety Gets Messy: California Sober, AA Culture Shifts & Speaking Truth w Bizzy
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In this solo episode, I talk about a shocking conversation with an old friend whose relapse—and the way he was treated in the rooms—left me stunned. From “California sober” to being kicked out of a meeting, I unpack what’s changed in recovery culture, what hasn’t, and why honesty about sobriety still matters.

I also dive into the bigger picture: how our world has become more fluid, more confusing, and sometimes downright upside‑down. From AI writing papers to states struggling to count votes, to shifting social norms and the loss of basic respect, I explore what it means to stay grounded, sober, and spiritually awake in a chaotic time.

If you’ve ever questioned what sobriety really means today, felt discouraged by the behavior of others in recovery, or wondered how we hold onto truth in a world that keeps moving the goalposts, this episode will speak to you.

You are not alone. We’re all trudging this road to happy destiny together.

Episode 646: How to Support a Loved One Through Gambling Addiction with Anita Ondine Smith

Episode 646: How to Support a Loved One Through Gambling Addiction with Anita Ondine Smith
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In Episode 646, I sit down with Anita Ondine Smith, a writer, lawyer, and sports agent whose work blends deep personal experience with compassionate, practical guidance for families impacted by gambling addiction. Anita writes from the perspective of someone who has lived through the ripple effects of addiction, offering tools people can use immediately to support a loved one without losing themselves.

Anita and her husband, former NBA player Randy Livingston, are on a mission to destigmatize conversations about gambling harm. As Anita shares in our conversation, stigma was “the number one impediment” to Randy getting help — and she felt that same shame as the supporter who didn’t know where to turn.

We talk about the moment she realized that supporting someone with a gambling addiction requires its own kind of recovery, and how her background with addiction in her own family helped her understand that recovery is possible — even when it takes decades to begin.

Anita opens up about:

·       How gambling addiction is often hidden for years — even decades

·       Why today’s world makes gambling more accessible than ever (“a casino in our hand and our pockets everywhere we go”)

·       The difference between responsible gaming and problem gambling

·       Why setting limits is essential — and how some people simply can’t

·       How she learned to set boundaries, communicate clearly, and stop trying to “fix” someone else

·       Why uncomfortable conversations are the key to change

·       How she and Randy talk openly with their children about addiction to break generational stigma

Anita also shares the story behind her new book, ASSIST, which she wrote because there were no resources for the supporter — the spouse, partner, parent, or friend living in the orbit of someone with a gambling addiction. She describes it as a menu of options, not a prescription, because every family and every addiction looks different.

If you’ve ever loved someone struggling with addiction — or felt alone, ashamed, or unsure how to help — this conversation will give you hope, clarity, and practical tools for moving forward.

Thank you for listening. And remember: you are not alone.

Episode 645 Parenting Then vs. Now: Crash, Michael Jackson & How the World Changed with Elizabeth “B
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

This weekend I watched Crash on Netflix and the new Michael Jackson movie, and I was struck by how dramatically our world has changed. These two films — one about a teenage girl spiraling through social media, weed culture, and zero boundaries, and the other about Michael Jackson’s discipline, creativity, and complicated childhood — reveal the massive cultural shift we’re living through today.

In this episode, I talk about:

·       How social media has replaced real connection

·       Why weed culture is glamorized and consequences ignored

·       Parenting then vs. now — and what happens when kids have no boundaries

·       Michael Jackson’s drive, creativity, and the structure that shaped him

·       What we’ve lost as a culture… and what we can still reclaim

From addiction and recovery to family, discipline, and the chaos of modern life, these films shine a light on who we’ve become — and what we’re missing.

Thank you for listening. And remember: you are not alone.

Episode 644 The Digital Epidemic: What Smartphones Are Doing to Our Kids with Dr. Johann D’Souza

Episode 644 The Digital Epidemic: What Smartphones Are Doing to Our Kids with Dr. Johann D’Souza
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Johann D’Souza, a clinical psychologist, Harvard Human Flourishing Program research affiliate, national speaker, and the author of Saving Teens from Toxic Screens. Johann has spent more than 15 years mentoring young people and thousands of hours working directly with families who are struggling with the impact of smartphones, social media, and digital overload. His insights are grounded in both research and real‑world experience, which is why so many parents tell me his message feels both practical and reassuring.

We talk about what’s really happening in kids’ brains when they’re constantly on screens, why youth mental health took a sharp turn in 2010, and how today’s teens are spending up to 75% of their waking hours online. Johann explains the rise in anxiety, depression, loneliness, and the loss of basic life skills — and why this generation is facing challenges we’ve never seen before.

We also dive into the cultural shift around parenting, the dangers of group chats and pornography exposure, the collapse of imagination, and why so many young people struggle with confidence, communication, and resilience. Johann shares what actually works: reducing accommodations, building tolerance for discomfort, restoring real‑life connection, and helping kids develop the emotional muscles they’re missing.

This conversation is eye‑opening, honest, and deeply needed. If you’re a parent, grandparent, educator, or anyone who cares about the next generation, Johann’s perspective will give you clarity, hope, and concrete steps you can start using today.

Episode 643 You Can’t Go Over It — You Have to Go Through It with Bizzy
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In this Memorial Day episode, I take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the day and the deep gratitude I feel for the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. I share a personal story from when I was twenty‑two, escorting the families of fallen Desert Storm soldiers in Washington, D.C.—an experience that changed me and has stayed with me ever since.

From there, I talk about my own journey of sobriety, personal growth, and the uncomfortable but necessary process of walking through life’s challenges instead of trying to go around them. Over the years, I’ve learned that change is rarely easy, but it’s always possible. The tools I gained in recovery—prayer, meditation, willingness, honesty, and self‑care—continue to guide me through every season of life.

I open up about the emotional shifts that come with motherhood, empty‑nesting, and letting go of old stories. And I share how gratitude has become the lens through which I see my life today, even the hard parts.

If you’re navigating change, sitting in discomfort, or trying to find your footing again, I hope this episode reminds you that you’re not alone. We can all learn to walk through the hard things with grace, resilience, and a little more love for ourselves.

Episode 642 Love, Trauma & Returning to Yourself with Salima Adelstein
Elizabeth "Bizzy" Chance

In Episode 642, I sit down with Salima Adelstein, the only female Shadhili Sufi guide in the United States, whose life’s work is helping people heal wounded hearts, dissolve inner barriers, and reconnect with the Divine through unconditional love.

Raised in a tight‑knit Jewish immigrant family, Salima’s journey took her from special education, hospice work, and alternative healing to a profound spiritual awakening in Jerusalem — where a Sufi master recognized her gifts, gave her the name Salima (“one who carries the peace of God”), and set her on a path of teaching, healing, and guiding others.

We explore:

·       How trauma becomes part of your purpose

·       Why resentment lives in the body — and how to release it

·       What spiritual healing looks like in everyday life

·       How to reconnect with God after feeling abandoned

·       Why love is the doorway back to yourself

·       The Sufi understanding of the heart, veils, and inner wisdom

·       How to find peace that doesn’t disappear when life gets hard

·       The power of unconditional love vs. conditional family love

Salima also shares the remarkable story of discovering her healing abilities while working with dying children, her father’s miraculous survival, and the moment her entire understanding of God, love, and purpose shifted forever.

If you’re navigating resentment, trauma, spiritual disconnection, or the longing to feel whole again, this conversation will meet you right where you are.
